Curriculum Mapping for New Social Studies Frameworks

ACSS is excited to offer curriculum writing "unconferences" this summer to help social studies teachers gather and organize materials to teach the revised Arkansas social studies frameworks next year. These unconferences will be organized and led by board members under the direction of Kristin Mann at UALR.

At present, we are offering 3 opportunities for you to gather with colleagues from around the state in an informal "unconference" workshop setting, where we will share materials for organizing and teaching social studies courses based on the new frameworks, on June 9 (one day only) at Lepanto, June 19-20 at UALR, and on July 20-21 at Prairie Grove. Participants are encouraged to bring their favorite teaching activities, lessons, unit plans, assessments, DBQs and web links, as well as laptop computers and flash drives. We will share and compile materials, with the goal of posting information and links to LiveBinders for each course on the ACSS website by the beginning of the 2015-2016 school year.

Here is the draft schedule:

9:00-9:30 Introductions

10:00-11:30 Break into working groups by course to develop curriculum map
11:30-12:30 Working lunch/report back
12:30-3:30 working groups to further develop curriculum paps/pacing guides

Day 2:

12:00-1:00 Lunch

Lunch and snacks will be provided. There is no cost for attending, and participants may be eligible for a small travel stipend ($25) or a follow-up stipend of $100 for participating in both days and organizing materials for posting on the web. Stipends are available to ACSS members and are limited by available funds.

We hope you will take the opportunity to meet with friends and colleagues from around the state to work together to meet the new frameworks. We're excited to offer this opportunity. If you aren't available for the full time, you may still come as you are able, but you will not be eligible to apply for a stipend. Watch for links to curriculum materials on our website in August.
